Set in a hidden valley and nestled within the mountains, Desert Rock is one of the landmark inland resorts developed as part of Phase One of The Red Sea project in Saudi Arabia. Located approximately 30 minutes from Red Sea International Airport, the resort has been designed to allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the surrounding desert landscape while experiencing a high level of privacy and controlled luxury.

The resort offers 64 keys, comprising 54 villas and 10 suites, many of which are integrated directly into the mountain. Each space has been carefully positioned to maximise uninterrupted views across the desert, allowing the landscape to become a central part of the guest experience rather than a backdrop.

The architecture has been designed by Oppenheim Architecture, with interiors by Studio Paolo Ferrari. While both play a defining role in shaping the project, the success of the spaces relies heavily on the lighting design by Delta Lighting Design, where careful control of light brings balance to the raw material palette and enhances the relationship between interior and exterior.

Desert Rock also features a range of supporting facilities, including a spa, fitness centre and a number of remote destination dining experiences, all positioned to work within the landscape rather than compete with it.

The Challenge

Photographing the lighting design at Desert Rock required a highly controlled and precise approach. Capturing lighting accurately is one of the most demanding aspects of architectural photography, particularly in a project where the relationship between light and material is central to the design. Poorly handled, this type of work often results in blown highlights or heavy shadow loss, losing the intent of the lighting scheme.

A key challenge on this project was the speed of transition from day to night. In this part of the world, sunset happens quickly, leaving a very narrow window to capture the balance between ambient light and the installed lighting. Unlike a city environment, there is no surrounding light spill or background illumination. The only available light was the lighting designed within the project itself.

This meant every shot had to be planned in advance and executed precisely within a limited timeframe, with no margin for error.

The Brief

The brief was to produce a set of images that accurately represent the lighting design across a selection of key spaces within the resort. The focus was on demonstrating how the lighting interacts with the architecture and material palette, while maintaining consistency and control across the full image set.

Particular attention was required to ensure that light levels, colour balance and contrast were rendered correctly, without exaggeration or loss of detail. The images needed to reflect the design intent as experienced in person, rather than relying on heavy post-production or artificial enhancement.

In addition to technical accuracy, the images were to be suitable for use across multiple platforms, including portfolio, awards submissions and marketing material. This required a clean, structured approach to composition, ensuring each space was documented clearly and consistently, while still maintaining a sense of atmosphere.

The Results

The final image set provides a clear and consistent representation of the lighting design across the project, accurately capturing the balance between natural and artificial light within a challenging environment. The imagery maintains control of highlights, shadow detail and colour, ensuring the lighting scheme is presented as intended. The photographs have been used by Delta Lighting across portfolio and marketing platforms, forming part of the wider documentation of the project.

Desert Rock Resort was awarded Light Middle East Project of the Year 2026, with the lighting design by Delta Lighting Design recognised at an international level. The imagery contributed to the visual communication of the project and supports its continued use across submissions and publications. The images continue to support the project’s visibility across industry platforms, reinforcing the importance of well-executed photography in communicating global award winning lighting design.
