Godwin Austen Johnson (GAJ) is one of the Middle East’s most established architectural practices, shaping the region’s built environment for over three decades. Founded in 1989, the practice has delivered a wide range of projects across the UAE and wider region, spanning education, hospitality, residential and civic sectors, with a consistent focus on practical, well-resolved design.

The Jafar Centre at Dubai College represents a progressive approach to educational architecture, designed to support collaboration, flexibility and modern learning environments at scale. Delivered by Godwin Austen Johnson, the project forms a key addition to the campus and reflects a shift towards more open, connected and student-focused design.

Built over 5,200 square metres, the centre is organised around a central atrium, anchored by a landscaped internal garden. From this core, a series of interconnected learning, social and study spaces extend, allowing students to move freely between zones while maintaining clarity and structure.

Key areas include an open-plan library designed to support both independent and group study, alongside a café that connects directly to the outdoors. Classrooms incorporate movable walls, enabling spaces to expand or contract depending on use, reinforcing the building’s emphasis on flexibility.

My role was to document the completed building with precision, ensuring the architecture, materials and lighting tell the story as intended.

Each composition was carefully controlled to maintain consistency across the set, balancing natural and artificial light while preserving material accuracy. The result is a clean, structured visual record of a contemporary learning environment designed for flexibility and interaction.

 

The Challenge

Photographing the Jafar Centre required a clear and structured approach to capture a large, open and highly flexible learning environment. The building moves away from traditional classroom layouts, introducing interconnected spaces, open circulation and a central atrium that needed to read clearly across the image set. Communicating this without confusion, while maintaining a strong sense of order, was key.

The shoot was carried out within a live, fully operational school, both internally and externally, requiring careful coordination to work around students, staff and daily activity without disruption. Lighting presented an additional consideration, particularly within the atrium and surrounding zones where natural light shifts throughout the day. Balancing this with interior lighting, while keeping materials and finishes consistent across all spaces, required precise control throughout.

The Brief

The brief was to produce a complete set of interior and architectural images that clearly communicate the design intent and functionality of the building. The focus was on capturing how the space is used in practice, highlighting the relationship between learning, social and circulation areas across the scheme.

Particular attention was placed on the central atrium, open-plan library and café spaces, ensuring each area reads clearly both individually and as part of the wider building. The imagery needed to demonstrate the flexibility of the classrooms, the openness of the layout and the connection between interior and exterior environments.

The final image set was created for use across awards submissions, press coverage and GAJ’s portfolio, requiring a consistent, high-level visual standard throughout.

The Results

The final image set delivers a clear and structured representation of the Jafar Centre, communicating both the scale of the building and how it functions in practice. The photographs present the relationship between spaces, circulation and light.

Where appropriate, students were included within the spaces, working and interacting naturally, providing context and scale without disrupting the clarity of the architecture. This adds a layer of realism to the imagery, demonstrating how the building supports day-to-day use.

The imagery has been used across awards submissions, press coverage and GAJ’s portfolio, supporting the project’s recognition within the region’s education and civic sector. Consistency across the full set ensures the building reads as a cohesive scheme, from the central atrium through to individual learning and social spaces.
